“Platform 9 ¾? But, Hagrid, there must be a mistake.
This says Platform 9 ¾. There’s no such thing. Is there?”
A visit to the Velvet Mill in Stonington is an adventure: Climb a set of stairs to find an art gallery in a soaring space… turn down a hallway and walk by an Asian-inspired clothing shop and a photography studio with a shoot in progress.
Follow your nose to freshly-brewed coffee and still-warm sticky buns at Zest Bakery. Fall in with the crowd and land yourself at the Beer’d Brewing Company for a sample of Bumper Crop Imperial Farmhouse IPA or Midnight Oil Oatmeal Stout.
In imagining an old mill enjoying a second life as a retail space, you might picture any number of polished, coordinated, brick-wall-and-wooden-floor type malls.
The large and rambling Velvet Mill in Stonington is decidedly not that.
This is a far more hip, sexy, and Brooklyn-esque space.
In your wanderings, you may pass a boat shrink wrapped for winter storage, a closed-door art studio imploring you to keep out, or dead-end in unlit hallways under renovation.
The Velvet Mill is home to an extremely diverse lot of businesses and artists working in a variety of disciplines, including painting, mixed media, glassblowing, jewelry, photography and ceramics. The place is authentic and alive with the work of creative people.
There is the feeling that if you explore long enough, you might discover something magical here… but perhaps never can find the way back to it a second time!
The Velvet Mill also hosts the Winter Stonington Village Farmers’ Market Saturdays 10-1 through the end of April… and we recommend this as the perfect time to visit!
It’s one of the state’s best winter farmers’ markets, and a stop on the CT Farmers’ Market Trail, drawing more than 20 excellent farmers, food producers, and artisans.
Shop for locally-grown and handmade foods: Seasonal and greenhouse veggies and fruits like salad greens, apples, microgreens, sprouts, spinach, carrots, bok choy, kale, onions, garlic and squash;
…shitake and oyster mushrooms, cheeses, fresh baked breads and pies, jams, honey, maple syrup, pasture raised meats, eggs, corn meal and homemade soup, pot pies and other prepared foods.
The market is open every Saturday, 10-1, at the Velvet Mill, 22 Bayview Avenue, Stonington.
